Lord of Night (#3 Rogues to Riches) Erica Ridley - Blog Tour

Author                         Erica Ridley
Publication Date        22 July 2017
Genre                           Historical Romance

In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into whirlwind romance with rollicking adventure.

Unlike proper debutantes, Miss Dahlia Grenville is secretly Robin Hood in a bonnet. Her home for wayward girls has too many dependents and not enough donations. But just as she's about to pull off the heist of the Season, she tumbles straight into the arms of the handsome detective who has sworn to deliver Mayfair's mysterious thief straight to the gallows.

Highly principled Bow Street runner Simon Spaulding's world is black and white. There's no mastermind too clever, no criminal alive who can escape the hangman. Until he realizes the delightful young lady he's been courting is a liar and a thief. Suddenly, his career—and his heart—are in peril. How can he bring her to justice when it means losing her forever?

Lord of Night takes a slightly different direction from the previous books in the series. I enjoyed reading the previous ones, but this is now my favourite.

Simon Spalding doesn't have a title as he was born on what's considered to be the wrong side of the blanket. He doesn't have time for the ton and their superior attitudes. His personal circumstances has taught him not to rely on anyone but himself. He is one of the best detectives in London and dedicates his life to his job. He works long hours and even then, he is at his best at night.

Dahlia Grenville is from an affluent family and doesn't quite comform to what's expected of her. She has turned an old Abbey into a school for girls who would be otherwise on the streets or in workhouses. She is the headmistress and is passionate about what she does. Her twenty girls are as important to her as her own family. Her biggest problem is raising funds to keep the school going.

Simon's first encounter with Dahlia is when she rescues a young girl from an unpleasant ordeal one evening. He is impressed with the way she deals with the situation and admires her cause. His follow up visit turns into regular ones and he finds himself helping out. He doesn't have any fun but, his interactions with Dahlia and the girls give him a different perspective on life. Their relationship turns into something more but Dahlia has secrets. Secrets that goes against everything he believes in! How will he react when these come to light?

Dahlia's dedication and unconditional love for the children are heartwarming. Simon sticks to the rules and is full of compassion. The banters between them are good fun. The story development and the twists are well constructed. The romance between two people from different worlds is absolutely beautiful.

PENNY

Five years ago, I left for college in New York, leaving behind my hometown and my high school sweetheart. I had a plan after I graduated; but somewhere along the way, my train, which was on a one-way trip to happily ever after, somehow got derailed. And so I'm back in Willowbrook, Alabama for one reason and one reason only --- to confront Colton Crawford, the guy who broke my heart and a lot of promises. But instead of getting the answers I'm looking for, I only end up with even more questions.

Colton doesn't remember me, and I suddenly lost the most important person in my life in the blink of an eye. I don't know if I can win back his heart, but I'm going to try with every fiber of my being to bring Colton back to me.

COLTON

Everything changed five years ago, and my memory was basically wiped clean. A clean slate was exactly what I needed since I wasn't able to save my brother in the accident that almost claimed my own life. Bringin' up the past just makes me realize how much I've lost, and so forgettin' is what gets me through the day. Not wantin' to remember wasn't really a problem until a pretty blonde by the name of Penny Preston shows up in my bar demandin' answers…answers that I can't give her.

I try to ignore the longin' in my heart, but it's almost impossible. Somethin' keeps drawin' me back to her…no matter how hard I try to push her away. Even though my brain can't remember her, my heart just can't seem to forget.

**Remember Me Always is a 95,000-word stand-alone contemporary romance novel. It contains adult language and situations and is not intended for anyone under the age of 18.**

I have read all of this author's books to date and to me they are all brilliant. "Remember Me Always"  is a real scorcher! It's the most poignant novel that I have read so far this year.

Penny returns to her hometown after spending five years in New York, where she has a bright future. A future mapped out for her! She is hoping to get some answers from her first and only love who broke her heart. She needs closure if nothing else.

Colton owns a bar in partnership with Buddy,  his best friend. After being involved in a serious car accident, he doesn't remember anything beyond the previous five years. Everything else is a blank. Some of his memory loss is by choice. It's his way of coping. Remembering hurts too much! He also lives with guilt and nightmares.

When Penny walks into the bar for the first time, she is shocked and devastated. Colton doesn't have any recollections of their past. His behaviour is completely out of character and hurtful. She then discovers that they have both been lied to by someone who is supposed to care! These facts bring about her determination to win Colton back at any costs. She sacrifices everything to hopefully realise her dream. A life with Colton.

Colton is now set in his new ways and as far as he is concerned, remembering the past is not an option. He "feels"  the connection between them but keeps pushing Penny away. Penny is not easily deterred but everytime that she feels they are making progress, they take ten steps backward. She is happy the one minute and an emotional wreck the next. Colton is "lost" and "hotheaded" at the same time. His mood swings make matters worse. How long can Penny cope with this emotional turmoil? Will Colton see her the way he used to?

This is a beautiful romance about true soul mates. The characters feel real and I couldn't help but feel what they felt. There is love and passion. The tears and sorrow proved to be too much to endure at times. It's also very frustrating to watch two people who are meant for each other going through these struggles. I was totally captured by this story and it's one that I will definitely read again.

If you like your romance with palpable emotions,  strong and lovable characters, then this is definitely worth picking up. Highly recommended.

I was kindly gifted with a complimentary ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Review
4 Stars
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

I haven't read the first book in the series but, there is enough background information to make this a standalone as far as the main characters are concerned.

Jason has a long standing girlfriend but they don't see so much of each other. He seems content to spend time with his two best friends, Annabelle and Violet. He has feelings for Annabelle and hides them well.

Annabelle has been secretly in love with Jason but pretends that he is just a friend. She is afraid that he doesn't feel the same. Besides, she is not a homewrecker.

Kingsley joins Annabelle and her friends for lunch and she is instantly drawn to his good looks and his physique. He shows an interest in her and knowing that she might not have a chance with Jason, she decides to move on. Her friends are apprehensive about how fast things are developing between them but, she is adamant that she likes him enough to take a chance. His behaviour sends warning bells from the outset. She is flattered by the way he treats her most of the time and makes excuses when he behaves badly.

There are some disruptions between her and her friends about the relationship but their friendship comes first. Kingsley starts to impose restrictions. Totally unreasonable! Annabelle doesn't see them for what they are as she is so desperate to be loved and to make the relationship work. Jason decides to come clean but her response is not what he expects. The situation becomes awkward and he gives her breathing space.

Annabelle is a nice enough girl but she can be stubborn and irritating. Jason is a perfect gentleman whereas Kingsley acts like a spoilt brat. He takes matters to the extreme before Annabelle realises that she has made a mistake. To me it looks more like desperation! Violet is very supportive even though she is having her own problem due to the trauma she herself has been through. Christie is a newcomer to the group and fits in very well.

The storyline held my interest even though I found it hard to connect to Annabelle at times. The lies, deceits, threats and misunderstandings are compelling enough to make this a page turner. Friendship and true love prevail. In some ways it's an indication of the difficulties that some adolescents go through before they find their true selves. It would appeal to fans of new adults novels.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

The Importance of Being Scandalous - Kimberly Bell

Author                       Kimberly Bell
Publication Date      27 July 2017
Genre                          Historical Romance

A horse race in trousers on Rotten Row. Visiting a gaming hall in a dress that would make her mother faint. Sneaking an invitation to a masquerade ball attended by only the wickedest, most debauched members of society…
None of these things are scaring off bookish but strong-willed Amelia Bishop’s stuffy, egotistical fiancΓ©.
The only thing left is to entice childhood friend Nicholas Wakefield into a truly engagement-ending scandal. The Wakefields are the height of propriety, and Nicholas’s parents have made it clear a wife from the neighboring Bishop family would be unacceptable…
But Nicholas would give up his family and his fortune if Amelia would ever see him as more than just a childhood friend. He’ll go along with her scheme, even if it means ruining them both, because he’s got a plan that will change her mind about him being merely the boy next door.

I am quite partial to a good historical romance, and this one more than met my expectations. Part of the main topic being about the Heirs and the Spares is a real bonus. "The way it used to be"!

Nicholas is the second son in the Wakefield family. His parents are the epitome of the snob tons and everything has to be done to perfection. For the family name. Nicholas has spent some time in Paris, where he met Jasper, a noble, who is now his best friend. He is "summoned" to return home and although he is not too thrilled to be back in the family fold, he has something to look forward to. Rekindling with his neighbour!

Amelia Bishop is from a prominent family who has been shunned by society, including the Wakefields. Her sister, Julia has a disability which is very much frowned upon. When Amelia receives a proposal from Embry, Lord Montrose, her family, mainly her mother sees this as an opportunity to get back into the good grace of society.

Upon his return, Nicholas is informed of Amelia's engagement and he is disheartened as he has been in love with her forever. He has never been brave enough to tell her and even if he intended to reveal his feelings, he is a little too late. They have been best friends since childhood and he has to respect the situation.

Embry starts showing signs that he is not who he appears to be and Amelia wants to rethink her decision. He doesn't take the news very well and refuses to listen to anything she says. Instead he resorts to blackmail! The Bishop sisters protect each other and together they go through various plots with the help of Nicholas to deter Embry but, it's like water off a duck's back. The mother doesn't help as she doesn't want to lose the opportunity of staying in the limelight . She does her own plotting with Embry!

I love the camaderie between Julia and Amelia. Some of their mischiefs are hilarious and had me in stitches. As for Amelia's mother, I felt like screaming at her for the way she discards her daughters' happiness. Disgusting! I love the interactions between Amelia and Nicholas. The ideal couple. Friends turn into perfect lovers. It's a heartfelt story with tons of fun, despite all the unpleasant situations. Jasper makes a wonderful contribution to the whole story and I hope that we get to read his story. With Julia maybe? That would be quite something.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

EXCERPT

August placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. The heat of his palm burned into my bare skin. I shivered.

That reassuring touch turned into a caress, trailing along my collarbone. I swallowed hard. His gaze was fixated, as if mesmerized, as callused fingertips ran a trail up my throat, along my jaw. He cupped the back of my head, sifting through the dark strands.

August leaned forward. My heart jumped in my chest. Soft lips brushed my ear.

“What are you feeling right now?”

His voice was low and husky, inflaming every inch of me.

“I don’t know,” I stammered.

The hitch of my breath, the trembling of my fingers, the flush of my cheeks, told a different story.

I felt his lips curve into a teasing smile.

“Liar.”

EXCERPT

“We need whoever provides security around here. Or Hades. They’re bound to be the ones who can open this. If we can find them, we can drag them down here and slap their hand on this thing to get it open,” Alex says.

“We need another way,” Sara says, shaking her head.

“We haven’t seen a single person since we got here. It’s too time consuming to track them down. And we’ll never get Hades.”

“Anyone know of any other ways to crack a palm plate?” I ask.

“Short of finding a valid fingerprint and going through an awful lot of steps to create a fake finger, the only other way is to break down the software controlling it,” Alex says.

“Are any of you hackers?”

Alex raises his hand.

“You can hack this?” I ask. “I didn’t know you were a hacker.”

“I’m not. But there isn’t a lot to do when you’re stuck at home with a terminal disease or trapped in a crappy boarding school. I taught myself a few things, made a few online friends who were a little shady. Depending on how sophisticated the software is, I might be able to crack it.”

“Would it be controlled from the computer out front?”
“It might be. Or it might be controlled from a central server that’s who knows where. No way to know without looking,” he says.

“That computer is password protected. If you try to force it, you may set off alarms.”

“Then I’ll have to be careful,” he says, heading back to the lobby.

We follow and gather around the desk while he works.

The keys clack under his fingers as he mutters instructions to himself.

“Okay, I’m in the system,” he says. “While I’m here, I’m going to shut down those security cameras. No need for everyone to know where we are.”

The TV feed blinks and is gone.

He keeps typing and clicking and muttering. The rest of us sit down on the floor and wait. There’s nothing we can do.

“Huh. That could be tricky,” he says.

“What?” I ask, getting up and going around the desk so I can see his screen. Not that the gibberish there means squat to me.

“The system that controls the fingerprint scanners also controls the card locks. Worse, it’s not separated by floor. I’m not good enough to bring down only one piece of the system. It’s all or nothing.”

“What’s the problem?” I ask.

“It means that the only thing standing between us and whatever is behind those cell doors is the hope that none of them try the doors. If the inmates figure out the doors are open, then security will be the least of our problems. All of them could walk right out of here.”

“Do it,” I tell him. “It’s not like we’ll be broadcasting the locks are down. No one will notice. Hopefully.”

“Okay,” he says and goes back to pounding on the keys.
After a few minutes, the computer beeps and Alex pushes away from it.

“Done,” he says.

The words are barely out of his mouth when a series of small pops echoes around the room. They sound like they’re both surrounding us and simultaneously heading away from us.

“Aw, shit,” I say. “The locks. We forgot they make noise! We are idiots. Come on,” I say, racing for the doors on the right.

We slam through the doors and pull up in front of door number four. No one is coming into the hall yet. I’m hoping the inmates think it’s a trap and are too intimidated to try their doors. Either that or they didn’t hear the locks release. Please, just let me get out of here before hell literally opens, I think.
